Sybil Andrews' Color Linocuts

SybilAndrews

I recently ran across British/Canadian artist Sybil Andrews (1898 - 1992) who worked in multiplate linocut. While her modernist style doesn't appeal to me, I always find something of interest in viewing multicolor block prints. In Andrews' case, I like the textures she's achieved using western methods and I find the edges of her prints especially interesting. Any guesses about why there's all that ink past the borders of the print?

I learn so much from other artists. That's why I like you guys. 8-] Thanx for the link to Sybil Andrews. I hadn't seen her work before but I really like it.

Could she have brushed her in on instead of rolling it out? That's an interesting question...

:-) It's crazy how the world works! I just finished treating about 30 Sybil Andrews prints and condition reporting a bunch of her plates for loan. The Glenbow Museum (where I work) in Calgary owns tons of Sybil Andrews works, including plates, prints, sketches, and her tools. Looking at the plates it simply looks like she rolled ink all over the plate, not caring to keep 'in bounds' with it. I presume it is because they were going to be framed and the 'mess' would be covered up.

Thanks for that comment, Lee. Lucky you, having the opportunity to get up close to the artwork at the Glenbow Museum!
