A New Gouge

NewGouge

I just got this gouge from McClain's Printmaking Supplies. I've been wanting something like this ever since I started working on large blocks -- a shallow u-shape that would make short work of clearing large areas. I love it! And it's not too hard to sharpen, either, because it's so shallow.

Prepping for the SGC Philadelphia Conference this week. I'm looking forward to seeing/meeting some of my online printmaking pals.

That is huge! I totally want one now. Could you compare it to a coin or something to give me a clearer idea on it's width.

Saw you in the Katherine Knuc video!

Marissa, it's exactly an inch wide. You can tap it with a mallet to make it really easy, but it's also possible to push it with hand strength (and believe me, I'm not very strong) as long as you don't try to go too deep on the first pass.

I have total gouge envy. That's an awesome tool. Great post, since it never occurred to me to even look for something like that. Nice.

I've never seen this size gouge before! Are you going to Southern Graphics in Philadelphia? I'm going to miss the vendor booths they have there (tools like your gouge are sure to be there).
